Although many people are for paying student-athletes more are against the idea. Only a fraction of all collegiate sports are making profit while many are still active at a cost to the university. The students are able to attend certain colleges because of their association with a sport, without the sport, most athletes would not be at such a high level university. In fact a large number of student-athletes will graduate without the horrible things regular students know as student loans. Horace Mitchell agrees that student-athletes should not be paid. He states, "Students are not professional athletes who are paid salaries and incentives for a career in sports. They are students receiving access to a college education through their participation in sports, for which they earn scholarships to pay tuition, fees, room and board, and other allowable expenses. Collegiate sports is not a career or profession." The NCAA relies on maintaining amateurism. The NCAA believes by maintaining amateurism it "preserves an academic environment in which acquiring a quality education is the first priority." Andrew Sharp believes if athletes are to start receiving pay universities will not be able to pay top teachers that will help all the students achieve the best education possible. He also says that by paying student-athletes over $20,000 dollars annually that they will stop caring about school because of the money they receive to play a sport. They will no longer care about their education and that will harm the student-athletes more than any injury in the long run. If players start to be paid then the teams that aren't generating any profit will be cut and then what will we be left with? College football and basketball and that's about it. Everyone needs to realize the consequences of paying student-athletes and take a step back before it is too late.
